Communicating with Whales

Thank you for joining us for today's Spotlight program. I'm Marina Santee.Voice 2
And I'm Liz Waid. Spotlight uses a special English method of broadcasting. It is easier for people to understand, no matter where in the world they live. Today's Spotlight is about talking to . . . animals!
Voice 1
Some people may think this is a strange idea. Speaking to animals almost seems a little silly or foolish. And it does not seem possible! But if you think talking to animals is interesting, you should meet a man from the United States named Gary Buttery.
Voice 2
Gary is a teacher and musical performer. You see, Gary is very good at playing the tuba. This large instrument plays very low notes. Gary has played the tuba for many years. He has performed in many different countries, all over the world. He has even performed for several Presidents of the United States. Here is an example of Gary playing the Tuba.
Voice 1
Gary enjoys making beautiful music with his tuba. But he also enjoys listening to beautiful music. When Gary was a young man he heard about Humpback whales. They sing beautiful songs under the water. He became very interested in these whales.
Voice 2
Humpback whales live deep under the ocean water in all parts of the world. These black, grey, and blue animals can weigh more than thirty six thousand kilograms. And Humpback whales can be more than sixteen meters long. They are huge!
Voice 1
Humpback whales can sing for very long periods of time. Many people consider the songs of the Humpback whale to be some of the most beautiful in the world. Humpback whale songs even change from year to year. Here is the song of one Humpback whale.
Voice 2
People do not understand how animals communicate. But scientists say that the songs of the Humpback whale are very complex. Studying these songs could help people understand how whales communicate.
Voice 1
Gary heard about the scientists who study these Humpback whale songs. And he listened to some of the whale songs they had recorded. He was fascinated with them. He decided that he wanted to write music with these whales! Gary decided to use his tuba to communicate with these special animals.
Voice 2
Gary wrote this piece of music called "Conversations with Grace." He used a recording of a Humpback whale named Grace. He listened to Grace singing her song. Then he wrote music for his tuba. When he played the tuba part, it sounded like he was talking to Grace! Here is a part of that conversation.
Voice 1
This is more than just a piece of music. It is like a man and an animal are talking. It is a special effort to create something beautiful. Gary and Grace cannot understand each other. But this effort of communication is beautiful to many people.
Voice 2
Gary performed this song for many people all across the United States. A newspaper even wrote a story about it. Dr. Peter Beamish saw this newspaper story. Dr. Beamish worked with whales in Newfoundland in Canada. He wanted to know how real whales would react to Gary's tuba playing. Would Gary be able to communicate with them? Would the whales become angry or calm? Would the whales listen to him? Or would they swim away?
Voice 1
Dr. Beamish invited Gary to play his tuba for the whales in Newfoundland. Gary played his tuba for the whales as he floated on the ocean on a small flat boat. As Gary played his tuba Dr. Beamish watched the whales. He wanted to see if their behaviour changed. He watched to see if they showed aggression or if they were interested in Gary's music. He watched to see if the whales did anything unusual. The experience of playing for the whales was very special for Gary. He says:

"A single Humpback whale would swim next to my boat for over an hour! It was very exciting to be next to such a large creature. And I think the whale enjoyed the music too! This happened many times. These experiences encouraged me to try and speak to these whales. I tried to make my own whale sounds using my tuba. But this was not always a good idea! One whale hit the water with his huge tail. He seemed insulted and he left. But he did return later, when I started playing another song."

A few times, scientists asked Gary to play his tuba for whales that were caught in nets, or traps. The whales were very frightened. This made it difficult for scientists to cut the nets away from them. But when Gary played his tuba, the whales became calmer. Then the scientists could cut the nets away from the whales more easily. It was all because Gary had played his tuba for them!

Gary cannot speak the language of Humpback whales. No one knows if they even have a true language. But, clearly, there was some sort of communication between Gary and these big animals. Communication does not always mean talking. Gary communicated with the Humpback whales through music.

The experience was good for both Gary and the whales. Gary enjoyed being near the whales. And it helped him to experiment with his tuba playing. The whales also seemed to enjoy Gary's music. They swam next to him. And his music made them calmer.

It is also a special experience when people see Gary playing his tuba for whales. Music like the piece "Conversations with Grace" is a beautiful piece of music. People all over the world can enjoy it.

Communicating is an important part of life. Communication can take place even between people who do not know the same language. Sometimes people do not always know the right thing to say. But sometimes just making the effort to communicate can be helpful to many people.
