Cyber Cinderella

Anetchka is a modern day ‘Cinderella.’ Do you remember this invented story? Cinderella was a beautiful young girl. Her two horrible sisters hated her. They treated her like a slave. Cinderella needed a hero. She needed a prince charming! She wanted him to ride on a white horse and rescue her. And, sure enough, she found her good-looking prince. He rescued her. And, like every good fairy story, it ended ‘happily ever after.’Voice 2
Anetchka is a Russian Cinderella. She is young and beautiful. She is poor - like Cinderella. And she is treated badly. Like Cinderella, Anetchka needs a Prince Charming to rescue her. But she is not searching for a prince on a white horse. She is searching a prince on the Internet! She tells her sad story online. And she is not short of replies.Voice 1
Internet dating and marriages are becoming increasingly popular. But some websites are also giving warnings. They say that not all the ‘Cinderellas’ you meet are real. Some women just want their ‘prince’ for his money. Organisation World Press reported about online marriage ‘fraud,’ or lies. They reported on cases in the Russian city of Barnaul, in southern Siberia.Voice 2
The press group said that some successful Russian women invent stories about themselves. They are only Cinderellas in the computer, or ‘cyber world.’ In the real world, they have successful jobs. They invent sad stories about themselves on the Internet. They may say that they are beaten at home, or have a boyfriend who drinks too much alcohol. Twenty-five year old Svetlana is one example. She said that she saw a way of making profit from the ideas foreigners have about Russia.Voice 4
‘They think that Russia is all about criminals and poor people.’Voice 1
Svetlana makes men sympathise with her sad conditions. Then, they send her money. Svetlana does not feel bad about this. She says,Voice 4
‘We make men feel good. We say they are the best. They lose any insecurities they have. I should have charged them more!’Voice 1
But the cheated men do not agree. A forty-six year man said a supposed ‘Russian beauty’ cheated on him. He said,Voice 3
‘She built a loving relationship with me. If you do not fall in love with such a woman, you do not have a heart beat.’Voice 1
He knew that something was not right when she asked him for six hundred dollars to pay for documents to visit him. He warns,Voice 3
‘If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.’Voice 2
This is one of many reported cases. Most of the males are white, educated and in their mid to late thirties. Why do they want Russian women? The men say that Western women are too concerned with their jobs. These men believe that Russian women care less about material goods. Many westerners choose Russians because they look European. But they say they have the patience of Asian women. So, they believe they are getting the perfect woman. And every man wants to be a hero! However, rescuing a ‘cyber Cinderella’ does not do much for a hero’s image!Voice 1
But is this the whole picture - poor innocent men looking for love, fooled by women after their money? Elena Petrova says it is not. Elena grew up in Russia. She is happily married to a Western man from South Africa - whom she met on the Internet. Elena has her own website. On her site, she says that most of the lies are not from Russian women. She says they are mostly from men, acting as women. Her site includes a ‘black list’ of sites to avoid.Voice 2
Elena’s site claims to speak ‘the truth’ about Russian women. It admits that many agencies lie - saying Russian women are all perfect. And other sites also lie - saying that all Russian women simply want to get money. Elena says that this is not true. But, she says that Russian women do want to be financially secure. And she advises men that they are more likely to meet a Russian woman if they can provide security. She says,Voice 5
‘Women have suffered so much in Russia with everyday surviving. They want to make sure this suffering never happens to them and their families again. A Russian wife will support you if you lose all your money or gain more. But, to consider you in the first place she must be sure that you are not an unemployed traveller.’Voice 1
Elena manages her own agency. Customers pay eight dollars a week for the service. For this, they can see a collection of Russian women seeking husbands. They can email as many women as they choose. Elena’s site contains many pictures of herself. She is tall, blonde and beautiful. There are messages next to her picture such as, ‘How to find a woman like me.’ It also contains success stories. It includes pictures of people getting married - meeting through her agency.Voice 2
In some ways the ‘success stories’ seem a little too perfect. But then, Elena says,Voice 3
‘A successful marriage can only be based on love and mutual respect. This is true for a Russian woman or a Western one. Your foreign nationality can make you more appealing to Russian women. But it cannot make your marriage more successful. Russian women make good wives, that is true, but only if she wants to be your wife.’Voice 1
The Internet may have brought technology to a new level. But it seems that marriage still depends on the old traditional values of love, respect, honesty and truth. Through the Internet, love may try and cross borders. But if values do not go with it, the relationships will fail. Maybe cyber Cinderella needs to learn this before she meets her real prince.Voice 2
