Facial Hair

Thank you for joining us for Spotlight. I’m Liz Waid.Voice 2
And I’m Sara DeKoster. Spotlight uses a special English method of broadcasting. It is easier for people to understand, no matter where in the world they live.Voice 1
This year Rainier Maute will compete in Olympic Games. He is from Albstadt, Germany. He is forty-eight (48) years old, and he smokes cigarettes. But Rainier believes that he has a good chance of winning the top prize! In fact, he is already a European and World Champion! Every morning he spends fifteen [15] minutes preparing himself for competition. He stands in front of a mirror. He looks at his face. He cares for his moustache. He combs it. He puts wax, a thick sticky substance, on these hairs above his mouth. It keeps the hairs together and in place. It keeps them looking good.Voice 2
Wait! That probably does not sound like an Olympic training method! Does he run? Does he eat a special diet? Does he even exercise?Voice 1
Well, actually no. Rainier is competing in this year’s Beard Olympics in Leogang, Austria*. At the Beard Olympics, men from different countries come together. They compare the hair on their faces, their ‘facial hair.’ Judges give prizes for the best facial hair! There are many different styles of facial hair. And all look very different. But there are two major styles - beards and moustaches. Beards usually cover the whole bottom half of a man’s face. But moustaches cover only the part of a man’s face between his nose and mouth.Voice 2
Some men may have a very strong opinion about their facial hair. For some men, it is very important to have a beard for religion. For example, an old law in the Bible says: “Do not cut the hair on the sides of your head. Do not clip off the edges of your beard.” [Bible; Leviticus chapter 19, verse 27] So some people following Jewish traditions do not cut their beards.Voice 1
Other men like to have a beard to hide parts of their face. About two thousand (2000) years ago a man named Hadrian came to power in Scotland. Scars and warts, or small bits of extra skin, covered his face. Hadrian grew a beard to cover these bad parts of the skin on his face.Voice 2
However, other men like to use their facial hair to create interesting shapes or designs on their faces. For these men, facial hair is a kind of art! And some men even use their facial hair to make art! Salvador Dali was a famous painter. He also had a very famous thin moustache. One story says that as a student, he even used his moustache to paint!Voice 1
Well, men are not the only people with opinions about facial hair. Women also may have very strong opinions about beards and moustaches! Some women really like men with big beards. They think it looks good. But some women really hate big beards! They may just think it looks bad. But, they may also think it feels sharp on their skin when they kiss!Voice 2
But, no matter if you love or hate facial hair, it has always been a very big part of cultures all over the world. People from different cultures may connect facial hair with different kinds of people. One culture may see facial hair as a sign that a man is dirty. But in other cultures facial hair may be a sign of strength or importance.Voice 1
In still another culture facial hair may be a sign that a man is clean or even fertile. Scientists say there is a reason for this belief. Testosterone is the main male sexual hormone. This body chemical encourages a man’s body hair to grow. So, a big beard could be a sign that a male is fertile, or healthy and ready to start a family.Voice 2
In Asian countries many people see moustaches as a sign of wisdom. Confucius was a popular teacher in Chinese history. Many Chinese people believe that Confucius was very wise. Pictures of Confucius usually show him with a moustache.Voice 1
Facial hair has had special meaning for many people for many years. And these meanings change throughout history. Adolph Hitler wore a very small moustache. This kind of moustache was very popular when Hitler was in power. And many people still think of Hitler when they see a man wearing this kind of moustache. But today, this moustache may make people think about the terrible things that Hitler did. So, in many areas of the world, this moustache is not very popular.Voice 2
Historians look at and study ancient buildings and writings. Some historians have found very old drawings, or pictures, of Egyptian men made over four thousand (4000) years ago. The drawings show the men with a thin dark line between their mouths and noses. The pictures show ancient Egyptian men wearing moustaches!Voice 1
In fact, some historians believe that facial hair, especially beards, had a special place in Egyptian religion. Most ancient Egyptians may have avoided facial hair on their own bodies. But the Egyptians believed that beards were a sign of their gods. When the Pharaoh wore a beard, he showed his people that the gods were with him.Voice 2
Many times, these Pharaohs wore false beards on their faces instead of growing real beards. These false beards were thin and long. They were wider at the bottom. Usually the Pharaoh tied a rope around the beard to keep it neat. These kinds of beards were very popular with royal people and gods. In some ancient pictures female gods even wear this kind of beard!Voice 1
Today, facial hair is still part of many religions. But not all facial hair is for such serious purposes. As we said earlier, some men even hold competitions and compare their facial hair for fun! These men come from all over the world from places like Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Hong Kong and the United States. They also hold the competitions all over the world! Anyone is invited to compete in these facial hair competitions! Of course, the one rule is that you must have facial hair!Voice 2
When the men meet for these competitions they share a part of their culture. They celebrate their similarities. But they also celebrate their differences. There are many things to celebrate about our bodies. Facial hair seems like it is only a small part of a person’s identity. But, it can be very important to a person for many reasons.Voice 1
It is good that people can express themselves in many different ways - even through their facial hair! Let’s always continue to celebrate our differences!Voice 2
