"It was three meters tall! It had a red nose. It was covered in hair. It looked like a monkey and a human!"Voice 4
"I saw three black bumps in the water. They were dark coloured. They looked like rocks. But then they moved up and down together in the water! The whole creature was ten meters long!"Voice 5
"The top of her body was like a woman's. She had long dark hair. But when she went into the water, I saw that she had a tail like a fish!" "It was a mermaid!"Voice 4

Today's Spotlight is on Fantastic Creatures!Voice 2
Fantastic creatures are strange creatures. They are creatures that some people do not believe in. They are creatures that are rare and hard to find. Many cultures have stories about strange animals or creatures like Mermaids or Yetis. Scientists say these creatures are not real. But many people say that they have seen them!Voice 1
So who should people believe? Should people listen to the stories or to the scientists?Voice 2
Well, legends and stories often have some truth. For example, you have probably heard of the fantastic creature called the unicorn. A unicorn is a creature like a horse. It has a shining white body and long white hair. And it has one long, sharp, white horn on the centre of its head. Many people believed that the unicorn was magic. They thought the horn on its head was very valuable. Well, in the middle ages, people were selling unicorn horns. These horns were made of ivory, a smooth, white substance. And wealthy Europeans were paying lots of money for them. These were not really Unicorn horns. But, the horns did come from a real animal. There is a whale called the narwhal. It has a long ivory horn on the centre of its head...just like a unicorn! Narwhals use this sharp horn to hunt other fish to eat. Unicorns are not real creatures, but the narwhal is. And for many years, no one even knew that the narwhal existed!Voice 1
There is another story from the country of Madagascar. An explorer named Marco Polo was travelling from China. He heard stories of a bird that was so big it could carry an elephant! Well, the stories were not completely untrue! For many years there was a bird in Madagascar called the elephant bird. They could not carry an elephant. But, elephant birds were three meters tall and weighed half a ton! They were the largest birds that ever lived.Voice 2
Just because scientists have not seen it, does not mean a creature does not exist. For example, in 1912, a pilot crashed his airplane on an island in Indonesia. When he returned home, he told stories of a dragon that ate pigs and attacked horses. People did not believe him. But later a Dutch scientist went to the same island. He discovered the Komodo dragon. It is the largest land lizard in the world.Voice 1
There is a creature that is very common now. But at one time, people thought it was very fantastic. In 1625 an Englishman named Andrew Battel wrote a story about Africa. In the story he talked about a monster that people called the pongo. Here is what he said:Voice 5
The pongo is built like a man. He is taller, like a giant! He has a man's face. He has long hair above his eyes. But his face and ears have no hair. He has dark hair all over his body. He walks on two legs. He holds his hands around his neck while he walks. He is very strong. Ten men could not hold him down.Voice 1
The English people did not believe Battel's story. Over a hundred years later, another white man told a story about the same creature. But it was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that scientists finally accepted it. Then they named the creature the gorilla!Voice 2
There are some fantastic creatures that people have not seen for a very long time. But that does not mean that they do not exist. In fact, scientists have found a special kind of fish near Africa. It is called the coelacanth. Scientists believed that the coelacanth died out millions of years ago. But then a fisherman found one in his net. The coelacanth is five feet long. It is a rare and beautiful creature. But it lived in the ocean for millions of years before anyone ever saw it!Voice 1
The truth is that scientists are still discovering new kinds of animals. Sometimes people like to think that humans have explored the whole earth. They think that there is nothing new to find. But this world is full of surprising and fantastic things.Voice 2
People will continue to write fantastic stories about monsters and mermaids and yetis and unicorns. And many people will even believe that they exist. And that can be a good thing!Voice 1
It is good to wonder about the world. It is good to ask questions. There are many cultures around the world that want to see something before they believe in it. They want science to prove something before they will accept that it is true.Voice 2
But there are many fantastic things in this world that science cannot explain. People believe in things that science cannot prove. Scientists still do not understand what time is. They cannot explain how gravity holds the universe together. Science cannot even explain how life on this earth started.Voice 1
It is good to be open to new ideas. It is important to understand that science is very valuable. It helps us learn and grow. But there are some things that science cannot prove.Voice 2
And just because scientists cannot prove something, does not mean that it is not true. There are many mysteries in this world. There are many new and fantastic things to learn about!Voice 1
