LoveLife
Voice 1
Thank you for listening to Spotlight, I'm Sara DeKoster.Voice 2
And I'm Rebekah Schipper. Spotlight uses a special English method of broadcasting. It is easier for people to understand, no matter where in the world they live.Voice Mix
Sexually transmitted diseases and viruses, pregnancy, AIDS, HIV, emotional trouble ... How do I know if I am ready? All of my friends are doing it! Film and television make it look so easy and fun! I did not know that having sex could change my life so much. I wish that I had never done it. But now, it is too late.Voice 1
These are just some of the thoughts of young people in the world today. Over the last twenty [20] years, the lives of young people have changed. The average age for young people to be having sex has gotten younger and younger. Today, it would not be strange to find children as young as twelve [12] years old having sex.Voice 2
This is a very big problem. There are many risks involved in having sex at such a young age. Young people are not ready to make good choices about their bodies. They do not always understand how dangerous sex can be for them.Voice 1
Scientists and social workers give many reasons why so many young people are having sex. One, young people feel a lot of pressure from their friends. They want to fit in with other young people. If their friends are having sex, then they will too.Voice 2
Two, young people can often mistake sex for love. They want to feel love from other people. And they think that having sex will help them feel that. But often, young people who have sex are not in love. Many young people do not even know what true love is.Voice 1
Three, young people are curious. That is, they want to know everything they can about the world. They see adults and other people having sex. They want to know what sex is about. They want to know what it feels like. They do not want sex to be a secret from them.Voice 2
Four, young people like to rebel. They like to do the things that adults tell them not to do. They like to break the rules. Parents, teachers and church leaders all tell young people not to have sex. But this can just make young people want to have sex even more.Voice 1
Five, young people have sex because they feel pressure from their boyfriend or girlfriend. Young people do not like relationships to end. They want to make their friends happy. If a boy thinks he is ready to have sex, he may pressure his girlfriend. She may have sex before she is ready because she is afraid to lose her boyfriend.Voice 2
And six, films, television and magazines talk about sex all the time. Young people can learn about sex from so many places. And these places make sex look cool. Young people watch sex in films and on television. Then they think it is normal to have sex. They stop taking sex seriously.Voice 1
So what can we do? This is a serious problem. Something needs to change. Every year, millions of young girls get pregnant. Millions of young girls and boys get sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS and HIV.Voice 2
Well, there is one group in South Africa that wants to change young people's ideas about sex. This group is called LoveLife.Voice 1
AIDS and HIV are a huge problem in Africa. Every year, millions of people die from AIDS. And the problem is getting worse. Many groups around the world are trying to help Africa with this problem. They send medicine and start hospitals. And they send teachers to help the African people learn how to stop the spread of AIDS and HIV.Voice 2
But LoveLife is a different kind of group. African people started LoveLife. They understand their country's struggles. These people believe that the best way to stop the spread of HIV and AIDS is to talk to young people about sex.Voice 1
LoveLife does three main things to talk to young people about sex and AIDS. First, they use television, radio, and the Internet to spread their message. They offer young people fun and informational programs. These programs encourage responsible behaviour. They tell young people where to go if they have questions or problems.Voice 2
Second, they offer health services for young people. They build clinics where young people can get tested for diseases. They can ask questions about sexual activity. And they can talk to other young people who are struggling with the same problems.Voice 1
Third, they do very detailed research to make sure that LoveLife is working. They talk to young people and ask questions. They want to learn how LoveLife can be the most useful.Voice 2
Young people in Africa say that LoveLife is making a difference. Many young people say that LoveLife has caused them to talk about sex with their friends and parents. Many say that LoveLife teaches them more about sex and the spread of AIDS and HIV. And many say that LoveLife has encouraged them to change their sexual behaviour.Voice 1
LoveLife tries to speak in a language that young people can understand. On their website they offer opinions on films and music. They talk about world news stories. And they teach young people about sex and AIDS. They do not try to make young people afraid of sex. They try to explain why sex is a good thing. They want young people to know that it is normal to have sexual desires. But they encourage young people to be responsible. They help young people learn to live healthy lives.Voice 2
One of LoveLife's goals is to encourage parents to talk to their children about sex and AIDS. LoveLife believes that this is the most difficult thing to do. But it is also the most important. Young people need to learn from their parents. They need to know that their parents care about their behaviour. Parents can teach young people how to live responsible and healthy lives.Voice 1
AIDS and HIV are a very large problem in Africa. But LoveLife wants to spread a message of hope. They do not want to tell young people how bad they are for having sex. They want to tell them how good it can be to live a healthy lifestyle. LoveLife values these four things. Love Believe in yourself. Base your relationships on commitment and understanding.Voice 2
Respect. Respect yourself. Respect the people you love. Respect those who are older than you.Voice 1
Dignity. Be happy with who you are. Do not harm your body with irresponsible behaviour. Protect other people the way you would protect yourself.Voice 2
Responsibility. Every person is responsible for her own life. The world can be a better place. But it takes all people working together. It is not another person's responsibility to solve the world's problems. It is yours.Voice 1
And it is mine.Voice 2
