Every day, people find reports in the news about new technologies. The world is changing. But do you ever stop to wonder...what good is all this technology doing? Why is it important to invent more and more new things? How is technology helping people around the world?Voice 2
Well, those are all good questions. At Spotlight, we like to talk about new and interesting technologies. We also like to talk about ways that people are using new technologies for good.Voice 1
Today’s Spotlight is on one new and interesting way that technology helps people. It is helping people become more creative! This new technology is a digital paintbrush. And some young students in the United States are having a lot of fun with it.Voice 2
So, what is this digital paintbrush? Well, first of all, it looks similar to a normal paintbrush. It is a long thin stick with small soft hairs at the end. But, you do not put paint at the end of this digital brush. The digital paintbrush makes pictures using...pictures! Here is how it works.Voice 1
At the end of the brush there is a very small camera. This camera records images. It saves the images inside the brush like a computer. It can record both still images and moving images. So, you point the brush at something you want to record. The brush records and saves the information. Then you take the brush over to a large computer screen. You point the brush at the screen. Then the image you saved inside the brush appears on the screen. So, this digital brush lets people paint pictures with images from real life.Voice 2
For example, imagine making a picture with the digital brush. Maybe you want to use the color brown. Where would you go to find that color? Well, you could use the brush to record a picture of someone’s brown hair. Or you might use the brush to record the wood on a tree. You use images of the world around you to create new and interesting pictures! And there are so many different ways to do this.

One teacher demonstrated the digital brush by recording a picture of a person’s eye blinking. Then she put that image on the screen again and again. She created a huge picture that contained a thousand blinking eyes!Voice 2

The BBC reported about the inventor of this digital paintbrush on their website. The inventor’s name is Kimiko Ryokai. Ms Ryokai is a member of the Tangible Media Group at a university called MIT. She works hard to find connections between the environment and technology. She imagined children using the digital paintbrush to experience the world in new and different ways.Voice 2
Well, Ms Ryokai got what she wanted. She took the brush to a local school. Children in one classroom used the brush for five weeks. She wanted to see how they would use it. She was interested in what kinds of pictures the children would make.Voice 1
She says that she did not have to explain very much to the children. They learned how to use the digital paintbrush very quickly. She thought that she would have to suggest things the students could record for their digital pictures. But she did not have to suggest anything! The children ran around on their own looking for colors and different surfaces to record.Voice 2
Ms Ryokai spent a lot of time just watching the children. She would hear one child say, “I need this color.” Then she would hear another child suggest places that he could find that color.Voice 1
Ms Ryokai compares her new digital paintbrush with other computer programs that let children paint. Most computer programs give children a limited choice of colors and shapes. Ms Ryokai believes that these programs do not encourage creativity. But she says, “Using the digital brush pushes children to look around and explore and investigate the richness of colors that surround us.”Voice 2
She also found that the pictures the children made told stories about the children’s lives. She found that the children wanted to share their pictures with the other students. They wanted to tell stories about where they got their images and why they chose them.Voice 1
One day, Ms Ryokai showed the children a famous painting by the artist Matisse. She asked the children where they thought Matisse got his colors. The children suggested different things and places in the environment. For example, they thought the color blue may have come from the ocean or someone’s clothing. It was clear that these children were learning to see colors in more creative ways.Voice 2
Ms Ryokai is working to make her digital paintbrush more complex. In the future, she wants people to be able to touch the picture screen for information. This information would tell where each color and surface came from. The digital brush is on display in a museum in Austria. Maybe someday people from all over the world will be able to use it!Voice 1
It is good to learn about new forms of technology like this. They make us look at the world in different ways. Not all technologies do this. Sometimes it seems that technology only exists to make people’s lives easier. But some technologies make people’s lives much more complex and interesting.Voice 2
The children who used Ms Ryokai’s digital paintbrush learned how to be more creative. They learned how to connect technology to their lives. They learned to look closer at their environment.Voice 1
